Marvel Comics writer Tim Liebe and Hero Games artist Storn Cook will be among the guest writers, artists, and cartoonists appearing at the Winter Comic Book Show, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Women’s Community Building, 100 W. Seneca St. in Ithaca. The show is sponsored by the Comic Book Club of Ithaca, the longest-running comics fan club in the country. Admission is only $2 and the show is open to fans of all ages.
Several vendors will also be on hand to buy, sell, and trade old and new comics, plus related items such as action figures and DVDs.
Sales of selected comic books and graphic novels donated by guests will go to benefit Tompkins Learning Partners, Inc. (formerly known as the Literacy Volunteers of Tompkins County).
Liebe is the co-writer of Marvel Comics’ acclaimed “White Tiger” comic, an action-adventure series starring Angela del Toro, the niece of Hector Ayala, the original White Tiger. Fantasy artist Cook’s credits include character cards for Legends of the Five Rings and covers and interior art for Hero Games.
Other guests include Ken Wheaton, one of the artists on “Simpsons Winter Wingding No. 2″ and “Bart Simpson Comics No. 38″; Superman novelist Roger Stern, writer of “JLA Classified” and “The All-New Atom No. 16″; Elmira native Joe Edkin, the writer of “Sonic X,” a comic book of original stories starring Sonic the Hedgehog; ilustrator Joe Orsak; small-press comic book creator Jim Coon (”Dead End,” “Detached”); cartoonist Josh Blair, creator of “Candy Or Medicine,” a mini-comics anthology, and Ithaca artist Aaron Kuder.
Aspiring artists and writers, take note: several of the guests self-publish their own work, and will be happy to explain what that entails. All of the guests will be available to autograph copies of their work, and a couple of the guest artists will be doing sketches and caricatures, so here’s your chance to see yourself as your favorite comic book hero (or villain!) or RPG character.
The Comic Book Club of Ithaca is a registered nonprofit organization, and runs its conventions on a break-even basis. Club meetings are at 7 p.m. the first and third Tuesdays of each month at the Tompkins County Library, Cayuga and Green streets in Ithaca. Meetings are free and open to all.
