Guillermo del Toro, who directed and co-wrote the upcoming SF sequel Hellboy II: The Golden Army, told SCI FI Wire that he and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola fashioned the follow-up so that it lays the groundwork for a possible sequel. But if there isn’t a third film, the movie also effectively closes out the story, he added.

“The way Mike and I did approach this was, when we were told, ‘Think about something, if you want, for a sequel,’ we went away and said, ‘Let’s talk about it,’” del Toro said in an interview. “Do we want to continue the story?’ We did the first one saying, ‘That’s it. It’s a self-concluding story.’ And I said, ‘Let’s come up with an arc that makes sense for us for the second and third movie.’”

In the new film, the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense team–Hellboy (Ron Perlman), Liz Sherman (Selma Blair), Abe Sapien (Doug Jones) and Johann–jumps to action when the truce is broken between mankind and the invisible realm of the fantastic. A greedy, merciless figure (Blade II’s Luke Goss) seizes the opportunity to try to take over the Earth.

“We said, ‘This is the story. This is how we end in the third movie,’” del Toro said. “And then I went in and wrote a self-conclusive screenplay [for the second movie]. So if there’s never a third one, I’m perfectly at peace.” Hellboy II: The Golden Army opens July 11, 2008.

The “G.I. Joe” brigade is growing larger. Rachel Nichols (”P2″), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (”Lost”) and Said Taghmaoui (”The Kite Runner”) will join Sienna Miller and Ray Park in the live-action movie based on the popular military doll and its comic-book and cartoon series spinoffs.

Stephen Sommers is directing “G.I. Joe,” which is slated for an August 2009 release via Paramount Pictures.

The cartoon series featured military soldiers fighting a terrorist group called Cobra, with characters like the mute ninja Snake Eyes (Park) on the side of the good guys.

This latest version has G.I. JOE, which stands for Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity, as an international force of operatives set in Brussels.

Nichols will play a skilled martial artist who specializes in hand-to-hand combat and counterintelligence. Akinnuoye-Agbaje will play an ordnance expert, and Taghmaoui the team’s communications specialist. Miller will play the Baroness, known for her espionage skills.

Hold on to your hats, mutant lovers! 20th Century Fox has released the following statement to update movie fans on “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” the highly anticipated X-prequel set to star Marvel’s lovable Canucklehead:

“‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ is set to star [Hugh] Jackman and will be directed by Gavin Hood (’Tsotsi,’ ‘Rendition’). The producers are Lauren Shuler Donner and Ralph Winter (who produced all three previous ‘X-Men’ films), along with Jackman and his Seed Prods. producing partner, John Palermo. The film will be executive produced by Marvel Films’ Kevin Feige.

“Leading up to the events of ‘X-Men,’ ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’—written by David Benioff (’The Kite Runner,’ ‘Troy’)—tells the story of Wolverine’s epically violent and romantic past, his complex relationship with Victor Creed, and the ominous Weapon X program. Along the way, Wolverine encounters many mutants, both familiar and new, including surprise appearances by several legends of the X-Men universe.”

We can’t wait! “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” is set for a May 1, 2009 release. Filming is scheduled to begin early next year in Australia and New Zealand.
