Transformers star Tyrese Gibson told reporters that he is considering playing the title role in a film adaptation of Luke Cage, based on the Marvel Comics superhero, for helmer John Singleton.

Speaking during a break in filming the post-apocalyptic thriller film in New Mexico last week, Gibson said that the movie’s still in development.

"They’re still tweaking the script, and all I will say on that is if that slot eventually opens up, I’ll probably be that guy to come in there and bring that man to life and have a little fun," Gibson said.

Cage was one of the first African-American superheroes, a wrongly convicted prisoner who acquires invulnerability and superstrength through an experiment. Actor Nicolas Coppola took his stage name, Nicolas Cage, from the character.

Gibson said that he’d have to prepare to play the bulked-up hero. "I’ll have to do a lot of benchpressing, [because] Luke Cage is a lot to live up to," he said. "But, like I said, I’m not officially signed on yet, but they definitely have me in mind."

Gibson previously worked with Singleton on 2 Fast 2 Furious. Legion is scheduled to open in the fall of 2009.
