Elvis Aaron Presley, had he lived, would be 73 today. That’s kind of a mind boggler….but its yet another reminder that the rock ‘n’ roll era that Elvis played a major role in creating is more than a half-century old.
So say happy birthday to the King….and listen to “No Room to Rhumba in a Sports Car,” one of his finer movie soundtrack efforts.
The odd thing here is that the Elvis fan cult doesn’t really celebrate his birthday.
Instead “Elvis Week” takes place in August, commemorating his death — weird, weird, weird, especially in light of the fact that nearly all other such important personages (presidents, civil rights leaders, etc.) are celebrated on their day of birth rather than their death day.
But I guess its better for Memphis tourism to have thousands in town in August than to try to get that kind of a turnout a couple weeks after Christmas.
